In Meghalaya, the BJP is set to mediate a peace agreement between the centre and the blacklisted militant group Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC). Ernest Mawrie, the head of the BJP in Meghalaya, verified this. The BJP in Meghalaya, according to Mawrie, will facilitate peace talks between the Centre and the outlawed militant outfit provided the HNLC is prepared to refrain from violence. "We are always there for them," says the narrator (HNLC). "The Meghalaya BJP would provide an environment for talks between the organisation and the Centre if they are ready to avert bloodshed," Ernest Mawrie said. Mawrie further stated that the issue was discussed with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju during his Saturday visit to the state. "He (Kiren Rijiju) has shown a great interest in bringing all extremist organisation in the Northeast to the negotiation table for long-term peace in the area," the BJP president of Meghalaya remarked. Earnest Mawrie went on to criticise the HNLC's recent subversive efforts in Meghalaya, including the Shillong bomb attack on January 31.
