Guwahati: A significant move unfolded as more than 300 former leaders and members of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) switched allegiance to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a gathering at the state BJP headquarters in Guwahati on Wednesday. State BJP president Bhabesh Kalita and minister Pijush Hazarika warmly welcomed the new members into the BJP, emphasizing joint efforts for the advancement of the state and the nation. "We extend a warm welcome to the former AASU members in the BJP. Together, we aim to contribute to the progress of our state and country. Their decision to join us is a positive sign for our party," stated Hazarika during a media interaction. Reportedly, this decision followed the recent assembly of the influential student union where former AASU leaders and workers agreed to make this transition. Earlier this month, a group of former AASU leaders and members, led by the expelled AASU leader, Dibyajyoti Medhi, met Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, affirming their backing for the BJP. Expressing his views after joining the BJP, Medhi highlighted, "Those lacking formal education should not hold positions in AASU. It's crucial that individuals leading the state's nationalist movement are not part of the student union." Medhi had previously raised concerns about the functioning of AASU, describing it as a 'monarchy.' He pointed out that only a select few benefited from the union's leadership, neglecting genuine students' needs. "It's time for active politics to fulfill the aspirations of the people," he added. This shift of former AASU members to the BJP suggests internal discord within AASU and hints at potential issues within the organization. The large-scale move to join a political party has sparked speculation about its possible impact on both the student union and the BJP."
