Kolkata: The fight between the Union government and West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee-led administration has now moved on to education. Late Thursday evening, State Education Minister Bratya Basu revealed that the state administration has decided to create its own State Education Policy (SEP) rather than implementing the National Education Policy formulated by the Union government. "The Union government, like many other things, is attempting to impose the NEP on state governments. However, we do not agree with this, and as a result, we have decided to create our own education strategy for the state "'I told the media,' he said. Within the next two months, a 10-member committee has been formed to report on the count. Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, a renowned Colombia University professor, Sugata Basu, a historian and former Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member, Suranjan Das, a former Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University, and Nrishinha Prasad Bhaduri, a Sanskrit language specialist, are among them. According to sources from the state Education Department, the committee would analyse the independent education policies implemented by non-BJP state governments such as those in Maharashtra and Kerala before submitting the report within the next two months. Bhaduri said, the state government, has every right to develop its own education policy. "In any case, it's a positive step. A country with such a diverse culture and a large population as India can never have a consistent national education programme "he stated.
