Guwahati: Assam Chief Himanta Biswa Sarma took a jab at his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, who has been apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate in the liquor policy case, remarking that disregarding a summons only "invites his own arrest".
"When a person is summoned eight to nine times, and he does not respect the summons, this means that he is inviting his own arrest. If he had responded to the first summons and appeared before it (Enforcement Directorate), maybe he wouldn't have been arrested today," he said. Sarma's comment came just hours after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) resumed its Lok Sabha election campaign in Assam on Saturday and announced five guarantees for the people in the northeastern state.
According to the party, the five guarantees focused on flood management, improving education and healthcare, protecting the Assamese culture, reforms for the tea industry, and employment opportunities. As it tries to make its foray into the state, the party has fielded two candidates in Assam for the upcoming national polls -- Manoj Dhanowar from Dibrugarh and Rishiraj Kauntilya from Sonitpur.
Following the announcement on Saturday, AAP leader Dilip Pandey said in Dibrugarh that "Arvind Kejriwal's guarantee is he does what he says". "The whole country knows that first in Delhi, and then Punjab, whatever Arvind Kejriwal had promised, he has fulfilled each one of them, be it electricity, water supply, schools, employment, women's safety, pilgrimage for old people, and pension. Arvind Kejriwal is the only politician who has fulfilled all his promises," he added.
The Enforcement Directorate arrested the AAP national convenor on March 21 from his residence in Delhi in connection with the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy. Earlier that day, the Delhi High Court refused to grant interim relief to Kejriwal linked to the multiple summonses issued to him by the Enforcement Directorate in the case. He is currently in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate until March 28.
