Asaram Bapu Released After 11 Years, Welcomed with Enthusiasm

RAJASTHAN: Asaram Bapu, who has been granted interim bail in a rape case, returned to his ashram and was greeted with a warm and celebratory reception from his supporters. The bail, effective until March 31, comes with several strict conditions.

The Rajasthan High Court granted Asaram interim bail in the 2013 rape case, allowing him temporary release on medical grounds. Late Tuesday night, after being discharged from the Ayurvedic hospital where he was undergoing treatment, he arrived at the ashram. His followers gathered outside the hospital to welcome him, adorning him with garlands. Meanwhile, the ashram’s staff celebrated by bursting firecrackers to mark his return.

Having spent 11 years, 4 months, and 12 days in prison, Asaram was released due to his advanced age and deteriorating health. Advocate Nishant Borda, representing him, stated that the bail plea referred to a prior Supreme Court judgment where bail was granted in a similar case in Gujarat. However, the High Court imposed strict conditions as part of the interim bail.

Strict Restrictions and Next Steps

Asaram, who had been undergoing treatment at the Ayurvedic hospital for the past few days, reached his ashram amid discussions about a potential visit to Prayagraj and Ayodhya, subject to the court's bail conditions. Reports suggest he may undertake these visits for spiritual purposes, including darshan and bathing rituals, although no official confirmation has been made.

Rape cases have been filed against Asaram in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, and Jodhpur, Rajasthan, resulting in life imprisonment sentences in both cases. While he has received bail in these matters, the High Court has placed significant restrictions on his activities. Under the conditions, Asaram is prohibited from addressing the public or meeting his followers nationwide. Furthermore, he must remain under the supervision of three policemen at all times.

Asaram Bapu was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by a Jodhpur court for raping a teenage girl at his ashram. He faced another conviction in 2023 by a Gujarat court for repeatedly raping a woman disciple at his ashram in 2013.
