Second heavy clash in 2020 claiming 23 lives broke out between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Heavy Clash broke out between Armenia and Azerbaijan on September 27, 2020 killing 23 people and 100s injured. Reportedly is the worst of clashes since 2016 arousing a fear of war between Armenia and Azerbaijan entangling Russia and Turkey.

UN secretary General Antonio Guterres has expressed his concern overe the fresh ‘resumption hostilities’ between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Guterr’s Spokesman said, “The secretary-General strongly calls on the sides to immediately stop fighting, de-escalate tensions and return to meaningful negotiations without delay”.

US State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus condemns the clash and said, “The US is alarmed by reports of military action along the Line of Contact between Armenia and Azerbaijan. We extend our condolences to the families of those killed and injured. We remain committed to helping the sides’ achieve a peaceful settlement”.US president Trump said US will try to stop violence.

“We are on the brink of a full-scale war in the South Caucasus”, Armenian PM Pashinyan warned.

The countries accuse each other for instigating the clash. Armenia declared martial law and ordered its military to mobilize after a major “flare-up in violence” when Azerbaijan broke out over the disputed region described it a ‘Counteroffensive attack’. Both claims about the destruction of other countries troops, helicopters, tanks and the region’s capital of Stepanakert and the towns Martakert and Martuni were hit by the shelling of Armenia and Azerbaijan troops, reported authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Turkey’s ruling party spokesperson Omer Celik said, “We vehemently condemn Armenia’s Attack on Azerbaijan. Armenia has once again committed a provocation, ignoring law. Turkey will stand by Azerbaijan brothers with all our means as always and Armenia is playing with fire and endangering regional peace. “

Azerbaijan disclosed about seizing control of up to seven villages including karabakh but Nagorno-Karabakh denied this, reuters reported.

Olesya Vartanyan, Senior Analyst for the south Causasus region of International Crisis Group told, “We are a step away from a large-scale war. One of the main reasons for the current escalation is a lack of any proactive international mediation between the sides for weeks.”

“War is resuming. Time for Russia, France and US, individually and jointly, to stop it”, tweeted Dmitry Trenin, director of the Carnegie Moscow Centre.  

In July 2020, fighting broke out killing 16 people. Azerbaijan reported, 11 Azeri Soldiers and one Azeri civilian and Armenia reported 4 soldiers death. Followed by this clash, Azerbaijan people start to protests marching through the capital, calling for a WAR. People yelled “Karabakh is Azerbaijan”

The Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE) has long been trying to mediate the settlement of the conflict with diplomats from France, Russia and the US- Making up the OSCE Minsk Group- trying to build ceasefire.

Armenia and Azerbaijan were part of the Soviet Union till 1990s. Since then, there is an unresolved dispute territory over Nagorno-Karabakh, controlled by ethnic Armenians but is internationally recognized as Azerbaijans. Ethnic Armenian Separtists seized the Nagorno-Karabakh region from Baku Capital of Azerbaijan in a 1990s war claiming 30000 lives.

The worst recent clash was in April 2016 claiming 110 people lives.
