The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is opposing the decision by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi to cancel the mayoral election despite approval from the Election Commission of India to hold the vote on April 26. AAP has put forward Mahesh Khichi for mayor and Ravinder Bhardwaj for deputy mayor. This year’s mayor of the MCD is to be elected from a reserved category. the first year reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category, and the remaining two years again for the open category. AAP MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak expressed concern, stating that this day will be remembered negatively in Indian history. He emphasized that the BJP-influenced LG canceled the election despite Election Commission permission. Pathak accused the BJP of violating the Constitution and discriminating against the Dalit community by denying them the opportunity to be represented as mayor. He also mentioned the party's strong support from its members and the Congress, securing victory in the upcoming elections. Other AAP leaders agreed with Pathak, accusing the BJP of subverting democracy and constitutional principles to maintain power.
